Abstract

This study aims to analyze the journalistic materials published in Kawkab America during its first year, following its establishment in 1892, as the first Arabic newspaper in the United States and North America. The study seeks to explore the nature of the journalistic discourse that accompanied the early stages of Arab migration, particularly among immigrants from Greater Syria, and to understand the social, cultural, and economic dimensions reflected in these materials. The study adopts a historical approach to examine the broader context surrounding the newspaper’s emergence, alongside a descriptive-analytical method based on content analysis. A purposive sample of twelve journalistic items from the first-year issues—including news, articles, and advertisements—was selected and analyzed within a structured analytical framework aimed at identifying editorial characteristics and intellectual content. The findings reveal that Kawkab America functioned as an influential media and social platform that contributed to articulating the concerns of Arab immigrants and reflecting their lived realities as a community in the process of formation, facing multiple challenges, particularly those related to integration and cultural differences. The results also highlight the newspaper’s clear educational and guidance-oriented role, as it sought to shape immigrant behavior and promote values such as hard work and discipline, while fostering a spirit of solidarity and mutual support.Furthermore, the study demonstrates that the journalistic discourse maintained a degree of cultural balance, combining efforts to introduce American society with occasional critiques, while preserving the immigrants’ cultural and religious ties. A strong presence of a “Greater Syrian” identity was evident as a unifying framework. The findings also indicate a level of religious tolerance, despite the predominance of a Christian presence, in addition to the newspaper’s economic role through advertisements that supported commercial activity within the community. The study concludes that the journalistic materials in Kawkab America during its first year constitute a significant historical and cultural source, reflecting the early formation of Arab identity in the diaspora.
