Designing Appropriate Clothing for the Health Condition of Breast Cancer Patients During their Different Treatment Periods

Abstract
Breast cancer disease affects patients’ psyche due to the physical and psychological changes they experience. Therefore, some breast cancer patients need a companion for their therapeutic support. The fashion designer can be a support through designing appropriate clothes suitable for the patient's health condition provided. These designs provide the patient comfort, self-confidence, and presentable appearance in light of the changes the patient experiences during different treatment periods. Due to the scarcity of academic studies dealing with clothing solutions relevant to the changes a breast cancer patient experiences, this study aims at identifying the physical and psychological changes the patient undergoes. In addition, it identifies the difficulties she faces in selecting her clothes. Then, designing and implementing some clothing solutions appropriate to her health condition. This research used the descriptive approach and the applied study. The sample of the study comprised of breast cancer patients in their different treatment stages in KSA. The study instruments used to collect data comprised of; questionnaire, observation and personal interview. The key results included the multiplicity of the physical and psychological changes a breast cancer patient experiences. And her suffering from the lack of adequate clothes suitable for her health and psychological condition during the different treatment periods. The applied part proved the success of the proposed designs according to the research sample satisfaction. The study recommended the necessity of cooperation between specialists in the field of clothing and textile with the psychological and health centers supporting breast cancer patients through providing health and appropriate clothing advice. In addition to supporting fashion designers and motivating them to compete in designing clothing for such category. As well as supporting clothing and textile research related to clothing solutions for health and psychological conditions. And establishing a scientific academy that supports design and innovation in this field.
