Abstract

The research is concerned with the study of Jackson’s foreign policy (1828-1837AD). It aims at clarifying the reasons and goals that led Jackson to follow this policy, as the traditional transatlantic foreign affairs were little of concern to his presidency, as the most disturbing was his confrontation with France over the treaty of 1831, when the French agreed to pay compensation for attacks during the Napoleonic era on American ships, as the Parliament refused to allocate the funds, so Jackson asked the Congress for a mandate for retribution and punishment unless the money was paid to the point where both nations summoned their ministers. The war seemed imminent, and at the end the French retreated in line with the British urging, and the crisis ended without other consequences, and American foreign policy became preoccupied with the neighbor Mexico and the settlers' uprising that had far-reach implications for the American domestic politics, and like his predecessor, Jackson yearned for possession of most of the northern Mexican States, and during the early years of his second presidential term, Jackson conducted a series of winding negotiations with Mexico that only served to escalate Mexican concerns.

Because of the Kualapato incident in Sumatra, President Jackson recognized the need for formal agreements and treaties with Asian countries, where he concluded a treaty of friendship and trade with the Siamese government and Muscat, and both treaties opened these nations to American trade, and the conclusion of commercial treaties with many Latin American countries between the years 1831-1833. In Europe, he signed a treaty with Russia in 1832 that awarded the nation's most desirable status to American commerce. It was the first treaty the Russians signed.

By the time Jackson left office, he was able to boast that his administration made great progress in boosting and promoting the American trade.
