Psychological and Social Adjustment of Mothers of Children with Autism in the West Bank Governorates and its Relationship to Some Variables

Abstract

Study Objective: This study aimed to determine the level of psychological and social adjustment of mothers of children with autism in the Gaza Strip and its relationship to certain variables. This descriptive study employed a comprehensive social survey methodology using a psychosocial adjustment scale. The survey was administered to 84 mothers at the "Max Care" Foundation and the "Jo" Institute for Special Education in the West Bank governorates. The results showed that the level of psychological adjustment among mothers of children with autism was low (53.49%), while the level of social adjustment was moderate (66.40%). The results also indicated no statistically significant differences in the average responses of the respondents attributable to the variables of age, marital status, the mother's educational qualification, number of family members, occupation, and the number of years since the child's autism diagnosis. Based on these findings, the study offered several recommendations, most notably: focusing on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) sessions and psychological support sessions, which help alleviate psychological and social stress and improve mood; and building effective social support networks by establishing support groups for mothers, whether in person or online. The internet serves as a platform for sharing experiences, feelings, and successful strategies for dealing with children, and for fostering relationships with family and friends through awareness campaigns that explain the needs of both the child and the mother, thus reducing social isolation.
