Sustainable Logistics for Art and the Application of Circular Economy in Art Exhibitions

Abstract

Sustainability has become a core principle across various sectors, and the field of visual arts is no exception. This research highlights the importance of integrating sustainable logistics and circular economy concepts within the context of art exhibitions, aiming to develop a managerial and artistic model that promotes environmental awareness and supports sustainable development in the cultural field.

The theoretical framework explores key concepts related to sustainable logistics, including resource management, low-emission transportation methods, reusable packaging systems, and smart spatial planning for exhibitions, all designed to minimize energy consumption and waste generation. It also delves into the circular economy principles such as reuse, remanufacturing, and extending the life cycle of artistic materials and exhibition infrastructure as vital alternatives to the traditional linear production and consumption model.             The research focuses specifically on the role of art exhibitions as dynamic platforms where these concepts can be practically implemented—not only in the organizational and operational structure of the events but also in the messages conveyed through the artworks themselves. It examines several international and local case studies that have successfully adopted sustainable practices, such as using recycled materials in artistic displays, repurposing industrial creative waste for alternative exhibition structures, or leveraging digital technologies to create virtual exhibitions that reduce transportation needs. In the Saudi context, the study highlights Diriyah as a model region with strong potential for hosting sustainable exhibitions due to its cultural and historical significance and its ongoing development aligned with the sustainability goals of Saudi Vision 2030. The research discusses ways to integrate Diriyah’s heritage-rich environment with eco-conscious logistics strategies that enhance visitor experiences and support both local and international artists in showcasing their work responsibly.

Through this lens, the study proposes a holistic vision that bridges management, art, and environmental responsibility to establish an integrated system for sustainable art exhibitions with lasting cultural and social impact. The research also emphasizes the role of environmental awareness among exhibition organizers, artists, and audiences, recognizing art as a powerful educational and advocacy tool for promoting sustainable behavior.
