The Level of Institutional Innovation in Saudi Universities in Light of the Global Innovation Index (GII)
Abstract
The study aimed to assess the level of institutional innovation in Saudi universities in the Western Region based on the Global Innovation Index (GII). A descriptive research methodology was adopted, and data were collected using a questionnaire comprising two main dimensions. The first dimension addresses the inputs of institutional innovation and includes five sub-dimensions: institutional culture, human resources, funding and support, educational environment, and partnerships and collaboration. The second dimension focuses on the outputs of institutional innovation and consists of four sub-dimensions: academic quality, practical applications, evaluation and improvement, and societal impact. The study was conducted on a stratified random sample of 219 faculty members from Umm Al-Qura University, King Abdulaziz University, Taif University, and Jeddah University. The findings revealed that the overall level of institutional innovation in both input and output dimensions, along with their sub-dimensions, was moderate. Additionally, statistically significant differences were observed based on university affiliation, favoring King Abdulaziz University in both the input and output dimensions. Moreover, differences in the innovation output dimension were found based on academic rank. The study recommended developing an integrated innovation system within universities, enhancing university funding mechanisms to support institutional innovation, and fostering a culture of practical innovation in academic institutions.
