Abstract

As a big data in educational systems grow increasingly complex, understanding the factors that influence student achievement is crucial. In Oman, particularly in the South Alsharqia region, while considerable data exists on student performance, less is understood about how family background—such as parental education and employment—affects educational outcomes. This study exploring big data in Oman educational system to addressing the gap by examining the correlation between family factors and student achievement. This research aims to analyze educational big data to investigate the impact of parental education levels and job statuses on student performance in South Alsharqia, thereby providing insights that could guide educational policy and intervention strategies. Utilizing a dataset of 54,916 students from grades 1 to 10 for the academic year 2022/2023 from the Ministry of Education, Sultanate of Oman, this study employs descriptive and correlational analysis to explore the influence of family background on student academic performance. The findings reveal a statistically significant relationship between student achievement and the educational and professional status of parents. Students whose parents have higher education levels and stable jobs tend to perform better academically, suggesting that the educational and economic environment at home plays a critical role in shaping student success. This study underscores the importance of family socio-economic factors in educational success and highlights the need for policies that support parental involvement and socioeconomic stability to enhance student outcomes. By addressing family-related factors, educational institutions and policymakers can better support students, leading to improved academic achievements and more equitable educational opportunities.
