Exploring Men's Fashion Trends at the Saudi Cup
(A Lens into Traditional Saudi Clothing)
Abstract
The purpose of this research was to examine men's fashion trends within the Saudi Cup, a prestigious horse racing event, from 2021 to 2023. The study used a qualitative approach and visual content analysis to understand the evolution of traditional Saudi men's attire for both daily wear and national occasions. The study sample included images published on social media and mainstream media covering the event over three years to identify prevalent design elements and trends. Results demonstrated the consistency of traditional silhouettes, particularly the Saudi thobe, remain largely unchanged, showcasing a strong adherence to cultural heritage. The study found that broader cultural and sociopolitical events influence men's fashion trends, as exemplified by the incorporation of purple into men's clothing, inspired by lavender grown in Saudi Arabia and its presence in royal ceremony carpets. Additionally, the study highlights the dominance of traditional clothing from central and eastern regions, with black being the most prominent color. The use of artificial intelligence tools and algorithms is proposed to analyze larger datasets. By applying such technologies, researchers can ensure data accuracy, control analysis parameters, and comprehensively document subtle details within the evolution of traditional Saudi fashion.
