Abstract

The issue of sustainability is one of the most prominent design and environment issues in the third millennium, as a general response to the global environmental crises and the exacerbating economic challenges, as a result of the high costs of energy and building materials, the depletion of natural resources, climatic changes, the loss of biological diversity and damage to ecosystems, which requires awareness among its inhabitants to maintain their viability. For a longer period, and from here, the concept of sustainability and sustainable design appeared. Therefore, fashion makers and designers must search for new mechanisms for designing and producing environmentally friendly fashion, and work according to new methods and approaches that keep pace with fashion lines and trends, which paved the way for the emergence of ecological fashion, which will open for research.

Research Objectives: 1- Benefiting from fish skins in creating an innovative eco-fashion that suits sustainability standards, and its results can be invested in developing small projects in the Sultanate of Oman. 2- Injecting a new resource into the local economy of the Sultanate of Oman, namely the supply, design and production of sustainable leather raw materials - sustainable fish skin products “tanning - exporting - manufacturing products”, which contributes to increasing marketing opportunities for the Omani economy.

Research Importance: Significance 1- The current study is one of the steps to get fashion design out of the traditional framework and link it as a future step to global fashion trends. 2- The proposed designs contribute to an attempt to maximize the use of natural resources for the availability of “fish skins” and to employ them as a model for the new ecological fashion, which has not yet received sufficient Arab attention in the field of design in general and in the field of clothing design in particular.

  • Practical applications may contribute as a basis for establishing small projects that contribute to the development of the Omani economy and the diversification of its sources.
