Dhahran Base Agreement Established Between the United States of America and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1951

Abstract

In the last years of World War II, the United States of America attempted to obtain an air base at Dhahran Airport in Saudi Arabia, to facilitate military operations in the war with Japan, and immediately after the end of the war the Saudi government agreed to conclude an agreement to build a US military air base in Dhahran.

This agreement was renewed several times until 1951, when the talks took place between the two parties to sign a new and long-term agreement, the negotiations touched on the issue of national sovereignty, the time period of the agreement, and the military assistance provided to Saudi Arabia, The American government wanted to satisfy Saudi Arabia by offering a provide military weapons to it and training its forces, in order to reach a satisfactory agreement with her.  After the talks, the Dhahran Airport Agreement was concluded on the eighteenth of June 1951, with duration of five years and renewed for another five years. The provisions consisted of twenty articles and an annex, in which thee terms of the agreement specify the area of the airport and the limits to be used by the US Air Force, and the sovereignty of the Saudi state in it, and the Authorities, powers, obligations and duties of the parties.
