Irony stands as one of the most significant rhetorical and literary techniques in discourse, transcending mere apparent verbal contradiction to become a mechanism carrying deeper connotations. It plays a role in subverting the recipient's horizon of expectation, arousing curiosity, and creating astonishment, all to establish a vision contrary to their assumptions and persuade them of it.
The traditions (Hadiths) of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) serve as an ideal model for studying irony. Hence, several prophetic traditions varying in their themes were selected and examined using the descriptive-analytical methodology. The research consists of an introduction and a conclusion flanking two main sections: the first addresses the concept of irony, its axes, functions, and types, while the second is dedicated to the practical application. The research reached several conclusions, most notably: while the term "irony" (paradox) was not explicitly known in classical Arabic heritage, several close equivalents existed, such as simulated ignorance, metonymy, sarcasm, paronomasia/ambiguity, affirming praise in a way that resembles blame, and affirming blame in a way that resembles praise.
Irony constituted one of the most vital expressive and argumentative tools employed by the Prophet (peace be upon him) to curb reception fatigue, stir the recipient's enthusiasm, and provoke their emotions. It was not merely a superficial stylistic embellishment, but rather an argumentative and engaging tool aimed at correcting prevailing standards, reshaping flawed concepts, and reconstructing the system of values anew.
