Abstract

This study aimed to examine the role of digital media, represented by podcasts, in enhancing awareness of the trend phenomenon among female students at the University of Jeddah, considering the increasing prevalence of trending topics on social media platforms and their influence on values, behavior, language, and patterns of digital interaction. The study adopted the descriptive-analytical approach and used an electronic questionnaire as the main tool for data collection from a sample of 51 female students at the University of Jeddah. The questionnaire consisted of two main dimensions: the first addressed students’ awareness of the trend phenomenon and its cultural, social, and media-related effects, while the second examined the role of podcasts in raising awareness of digital issues and promoting a critical understanding of trends. The results showed that the students’ level of awareness of the trend phenomenon was moderate, with a mean score of 3.47 and a relative weight of 69.37%. The findings also revealed a high level of awareness of some negative effects of trends, particularly those related to their influence on social values, habits, behaviors, language, and young people’s modes of expression. In addition, the results indicated a high level of awareness among students regarding the importance of verifying information and adhering to ethical, religious, and societal standards before interacting with trends. However, their possession of clear strategies for verifying the validity of trends was found to be moderate. Regarding the second dimension, students’ attitudes toward the role of podcasts in awareness-raising were high, with a mean score of 4.28 and a relative weight of 85.59%. The students perceived podcasts as providing deeper analysis of digital issues compared with fast-paced content.
