The Impact of Excessive Self Awareness on Artistic Creativity Among Female Art Students in Saudi Universities
Abstract
This study investigates the impact of excessive self-awareness on artistic creativity among female art students in Saudi universities. Excessive self-awareness is conceptualized as a heightened state of internal monitoring and continuous evaluation during the artistic process, which may interfere with spontaneous creative expression. The study is grounded in Cognitive Load Theory, which suggests that increased mental effort can overload working memory and reduce creative efficiency,A descriptive analytical approach was employed, using a questionnaire distributed to a sample of female art students. The findings reveal that excessive self-awareness is a common experience during artistic practice, often manifested through internal critical dialogue, hesitation, and fear of judgment. These factors interrupt the natural flow of creativity and limit imaginative flexibility, leading students to rely on safe and repetitive artistic choices. The results also highlight the influence of the educational environment. High levels of evaluation pressure and comparison among students increase self-awareness and anxiety. In contrast, supportive learning environments that encourage experimentation, provide sufficient time, and reduce evaluative tension enhance immersion and creative performance. The study concludes that the main challenge does not lie in students’ technical abilities, but in their relationship with the self during artistic execution. Reducing excessive self-monitoring and promoting creative engagement are essential for improving artistic creativity and restoring creative flow in educational contexts. These findings suggest the need for pedagogical strategies that balance awareness with freedom, support confidence, and foster flexible thinking during artistic practice to sustain long-term creative development among students in higher education and future research.
