The Artistic and Philosophical Values of Colored Archaeological Paintings in the North of the Kingdom
(An Analytical Artistic Study)
Abstract
The importance of this study lies in its examination of a number of colored archaeological paintings from the north of the Kingdom (from the Hail region near Tabuk). It examines twelve paintings obtained from several different sites, depicting scenes of various animals, human figures, and geometric symbols. These paintings were executed in a style ranging from realism to abstraction and symbolic forms, in lively scenes inspired by the local environment. The importance of these paintings lies in their being rare works of art that use color as a primary medium. Their artistic styles and the artistic school adopted were studied, and their intellectual and philosophical contents were explained. Among the study's most notable findings is the strong presence of religious and ritual practices, as well as others with symbolic philosophy. Social themes emerged, including some of the activities practiced by humans at that time, which can be roughly dated to the Bronze and Iron Ages.
